Professor Hering Memorial Research Fund

In 2022, Lucy was awarded the Professor Hering Memorial Research Fund by the British Entomological and Natural History Society to investigate local plant gall-causing species and explore their potential as natural sources of ink.

Focusing on East London, within a five-mile radius of her home, Lucy researched and collected specimens of plant galls caused by insects and fungi. Working in accordance with the Society’s collection guidelines, she documented her findings and submitted records to its database, contributing to a broader understanding of local gall-causing species and their distribution.

With an emphasis on education, the project also explored the historical and practical use of plant galls in ink-making. Lucy developed a standardised ink recipe, which she tested across ten different gall specimens, examining their individual pigment properties and variations in colour. Her research culminated in an illustrated educational pamphlet, distributed to local schools and shared during her workshops, to encourage greater awareness of these remarkable natural materials, their historical significance and the importance of ethical, sustainable collecting.

Lucy subsequently presented her findings at the British Cecidological Society’s annual conference through an exhibition of paintings, ink samples and research materials, bringing together scientific observation, traditional colour-making techniques and artistic practice.
