Waste Stream Colours From The Anthropocene
Deep-dive into the Properties of Pigments & Paints
Book a Workshop with Lucy Mayes, Founder of London Pigment and Author of ‘The Natural Pigment Handbook’.
Join Lucy in her Southsea studio, Portsmouth, for a 2.5 hour hands-on workshop exploring the art of natural colour making.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to deepen your practice, you’ll leave with new knowledge, hands-on experience, and your own handmade colours.
About the Session
This session dynamically encompasses historical recipes such as 18th century laking processes and earth pigment processing and applies them in experimental and unusual ways to ‘found materials’ to create sustainable colour.
This workshop will enable you to reconsider the materials you use for your creative practice in order to make your work more ecologically minded.
Principles & Theory
The same theory will be covered in the The Fundamentals Of Colour: Pigments Workshop
Processes & Techniques
In depth look at the properties of different waste stream pigments that Lucy Makes and how to apply these processes and rationale to the material that participants may have locally.
Such as natural iron oxide pigments, verdigris, lake pigments, carbon black pigments.
Practical pigment making demonstrations including earth processing & laking procedures.
Paint making workshop (watercolour or oil paint etc) where we will explore the properties of hand-made natural & synthetic pigments. This will be followed by the filling out especially designed colour charts.
Binders & fillers and how they affect the resulting paint handling and dried paint film.
