The Paintmakers of Lira- Mentorship
The Paintmakers of Lira, Uganda
The Paintmakers of Lira is a small, independent pigment and handmade watercolour studio based in Lira, in the Lango region of northern Uganda. Working with locally sourced earth pigments, clays, charcoal and natural binders, the collective produces artist-quality colours using traditional, entirely hand-operated methods. Their practice draws on the rich cultural heritage of the Lango people, researching the historical uses of natural colour in traditional architecture, body painting and ceremonial practices. Through pigment making, community collaboration and knowledge exchange, the collective celebrates the relationship between colour, landscape and cultural identity, while creating sustainable livelihoods and helping preserve local material traditions.
In 2024 Lucy supported Sharon Kali & The Paintmakers of Lira with working with their local earth pigments and provided consultation to their long term collaborator David Gross.
