Natural Colour Making for Artists (Recordings Available)

A comprehensive year-long online programme introducing the foundations of making natural art materials for drawing, painting and printmaking. Learn to create pigments, paints, inks, pastels and crayons from earths, plants and fungi alongside an international faculty of artists and makers. Lucy Mayes teaches Art Materials Fundamentals, Binders & Pigments, introducing the essential principles of pigment chemistry, binders and paint making. The course includes over 34 hours of recorded teaching, downloadable PDFs and ongoing access to all resources. 

Making & Working With Natural Art Materials

An advanced year-long programme exploring the making and use of handmade art materials in greater depth. Lucy teaches Core Foundations of Paint-Making and Pigments: Fundamentals Deep Dive, covering paint formulation, pigment behaviour and practical approaches to working with natural colour. The programme includes over 26 hours of teaching, downloadable handouts, mentoring opportunities and access to all recordings. 

Lake Pigment Making: A Deep Dive

A year-long online programme taught by Natalie Stopka, Lucy Mayes and Julie Beeler exploring the history, chemistry and practice of lake pigment making, from ancient Egyptian recipes to contemporary methods. Monthly live sessions examine historical processes alongside modern applications.

Wild Pigment Sessions

A collection of recorded demonstrations focusing on pigment sourcing, processing and paint making. Lucy's sessions include:

• Earth Pigments of Britain – Part One
• Earth Pigments of Britain – Part Two
• Urban Pigment Foraging (4 hours)
• Art Materials Fundamentals, Binders & Pigments (2 hours)
• Burning Earths for Colour (2 hours)

These recordings can be purchased individually or as part of the Wild Pigment Sessions with Lucy Mayes (12 hours) or the expanded Wild Pigment Sessions with Caroline Ross & Lucy Mayes (16 hours). 

Verdigris with Lucy Mayes

A specialist online series dedicated entirely to verdigris pigment. Across three in-depth sessions, Lucy explores the history, chemistry and manufacture of verdigris, historical recipes, paint making, purification, toxicity, stability and contemporary applications. Recordings and supporting PDFs are available.
